Veteran, serviceman, or military: what’s the difference?
In society, these terms are often used interchangeably, although they have different meanings. Understanding these differences helps us speak more accurately about people who serve or have served in Ukraine’s security and defense sector.
Who Is a Service Member?
A service member is a person who has an official legal status and serves in the Armed Forces of Ukraine or other military formations. This may include a person serving under contract, someone who has been mobilized, or an individual performing another form of military service provided for by law.
In other words, a service member is a person who is currently in military service and performs military duties defined by the state.
Who Is a Military Professional?
In everyday communication, the word “military” is often used to refer to any service member. However, in a professional context, this term may have a broader and deeper meaning.
A military professional is a person who has received professional military education, mastered military affairs as a profession, and acquired the relevant knowledge, skills, and competencies. Professional training, military culture, leadership qualities, and specialized education are what shape a military professional as a specialist.
Not every service member is a military professional in the strict professional sense of the term. For example, a person may be mobilized and perform military service without having previously received military education or undergone many years of professional military training. At the same time, an officer who has graduated from a military educational institution and dedicated their life to military service can be considered a professional member of the military.
Thus, being a service member is a legal status, while being a military professional refers to a profession and professional qualification.
Who Is a Veteran?
A veteran is a person who has obtained a legally recognized veteran status after completing military service, participating in combat operations, or carrying out duties related to the defense of the state.
Veterans may include both former career military professionals and former service members who were called up through mobilization and fulfilled their duty to defend the country.
Veteran status does not determine the level of military education or professional training. Rather, it reflects a person’s service, participation in the defense of the state, and the experience gained through that service.
Why Is It Important to Distinguish Between These Terms?
Using these terms accurately is a sign of respect for people and their experiences.
- Service member – refers to a current legal status of military service.
- Military professional – refers to a profession that involves specialized military education and professional training.
- Veteran – refers to the status of a person who has already completed military service or participated in the defense of the state and has received the corresponding legal recognition.
Understanding these distinctions helps us speak correctly about the military community and properly recognize each person’s contribution to the defense of the country. It should also be noted that Ukrainian legislation does not always provide a separate legal definition of the term “military.” Therefore, if an article aims to be legally precise, it is advisable to clarify that this interpretation of the term is used in a professional and social context rather than as a separate legal status. This helps avoid possible misunderstandings or objections from specialists.
